16 min read

Japanese adverbs are called fukushi (副詞ふくし). They express frequency, time, degree, manner, certainty, and relationships between ideas.

Learn 100 adverbs and adverbial expressions in 10 categories. The list includes lexical adverbs, adjective-derived forms, and phrases that function adverbially.

Each card shows kanji or kana, furigana, romaji, an English meaning, and an example sentence.

100 Japanese Words Series

Explore five core groups: verbs, nouns, adjectives, adverbs, and expressions.

Starter Groups for Practice

Use these three groups to recognize what an adverb contributes to an everyday sentence.

Frequency

よく (often), いつも (always), and ときどき (sometimes) tell how often an action occurs.

Time

もう (already), まだ (still or not yet), and すぐ (immediately) show an action’s time or stage.

Degree

とても (very), ちょっと (a little), and もっと (more) change the strength of a quality or action.

10-Minute Practice: Choose five adverbs. Write five sentences about activities you do.

Quick Patterns for Using Fukushi

An adverb usually appears before the word or part of the sentence it modifies.

FunctionPatternExample
Modify a verbN は + adverb + Vわたしよくほんみます。
Modify an adjectiveAdverb + adjectiveきょうはとてもさむいです。
Modify a whole sentenceAdverb + sentenceたぶん明日あしたあめです。

Fukushi Position Guide

Elements other than the predicate can move with the speaker’s focus. Keep an adverb near what it modifies when the intended meaning needs to stay clear.

PositionExampleFunction
Before a verbよくべますFrequency or manner
Before an adjectiveとてもあついですDegree
At the startたぶんきますGuess or speaker stance
Negative pairingあまり + VませんLow degree or frequency
Step orderまず → つぎに → さいごにProcess or sequence

⚠️ Three Pairs to Watch

Some adverbs depend on sentence polarity or the speaker’s level of certainty.

  • In neutral beginner patterns, ぜんぜん and あまり usually pair with a negative form.
  • もう means “already,” while まだ can mean “still” or “not yet.”
  • きっと expresses stronger confidence than たぶん.
