Japanese plain form (plain form)

You already learned the polite form (~ます) in Lesson 2 and the te-form in Lesson 3. Now comes something critical: the plain form (普通形ふつうけい / Futsuu-kei / plain form).

Why does this matter so much? Almost all intermediate grammar is built on plain form:

  • Expressing wants (~たい)
  • Compound sentences (~から、~ので、~けど)
  • Quoting thoughts (~と思おもう)
  • Everyday casual conversation

⚠️ Without plain form, you cannot move on solidly to N4/N3 material. This page is the foundation for everything that follows!

1. What Is the Plain Form?

In Lesson 2, you learned the polite form (丁寧形 / てい寧形ねいけい):

Polite (~ます)Meaning
食たべますeat
飲のみますdrink
しますdo

Plain form is the version without ~ます. It is the “raw” verb form used for:

  1. Casual conversation — friends, family, people younger than you
  2. Writing — books, blogs, newspapers, social media
  3. Before grammar patterns — as a building block for more complex grammar
  4. Inside complex sentences — only the final clause is polite; middle clauses use plain form

2. Verb Conjugation: 4 Tenses

Every verb has 4 plain forms:

FormMeaningExample (食たべる)
Affirmative non-past“…eat / will eat”食たべる
Negative non-past“…do not eat”食たべない
Affirmative past“…ate”食たべた
Negative past“…did not eat”食たべなかった

Learn each for every verb group.

3. Ichidan Verbs (Group 2 / Ru-verbs)

Verbs ending in ~る with an e or i vowel before it. This is the easiest group.

Rule: Drop る, add the ending

FormRule食たべる見みる
Affirmativestem + る食たべる見みる
Negativestem + ない食たべない見みない
Paststem + た食たべた見みた
Neg. paststem + なかった食たべなかった見みなかった

More examples:

DictionaryMeaningNegativePastNeg. past
起おきるwake up起おきない起おきた起おきなかった
寝ねるsleep寝ねない寝ねた寝ねなかった
教おしえるteach教おしえない教おしえた教おしえなかった

4. Godan Verbs (Group 1 / U-verbs)

Verbs ending in consonant + う. Harder because the ending changes with the last mora.

Negative: last mora → a-row + ない

Change the final mora to the a-row and add ない.

Ending→ a-row + ないExample
~う→ わ + ない買かう → 買かわない
~く→ か + ない書かく → 書かかない
~ぐ→ が + ない泳およぐ → 泳およがない
~す→ さ + ない話はなす → 話はなさない
~つ→ た + ない待まつ → 待またない
~ぬ→ な + ない死しぬ → 死しなない
~ぶ→ ば + ない遊あそぶ → 遊あそばない
~む→ ま + ない飲のむ → 飲のまない
~る→ ら + ない帰かえる → 帰かえらない

⚠️ Note: ~う does not become あない—it becomes わない. That is the one special case!

Past: same pattern as te-form!

If you know te-form from Lesson 3, this is easy. Just swap て/で for た/だ:

Te-form→ Past
書かいて→ 書かいた
泳およいで→ 泳およいだ
飲のんで→ 飲のんだ
話はなして→ 話はなした
待まって→ 待まった
買かって→ 買かった
帰かえって→ 帰かえった

Negative past: ない → なかった

Easy—~ない behaves like an i-adjective, so replace い with かった:

Negative→ Neg. past
書かかない→ 書かかなかった
飲のまない→ 飲のまなかった
話はなさない→ 話はなさなかった

泳およぐswim泳およがない泳およいだ泳およがなかった
買かうbuy買かわない買かった買かわなかった
帰かえるgo home帰かえらない帰かえった帰かえらなかった

5. Irregular Verbs

Only 2 irregular verbs—you already know them:

Formする (do)来くる (come)
Affirmativeする来くる
Negativeしない来ない (来こない)
Pastした来た (来きた)
Neg. pastしなかった来こなかった

💡 Note: 来くる changes reading: くる → こない (negative) → きた (past). The kanji stays 来; the furigana changes!

6. Adjectives in Plain Form

Adjectives also have plain forms. After polite forms in Lesson 2, mostly drop ~です.

i-Adjectives (形容詞けいようし)

FormPolitePlainExample (高たかい = expensive)
Affirmative高たかいです高たかいexpensive
Negative高たかくないです高たかくないnot expensive
Past高たかかったです高たかかったwas expensive
Neg. past高たかくなかったです高たかくなかったwas not expensive

More examples:

DictionaryMeaningNegativePastNeg. past
安やすいcheap安やすくない安やすかった安やすくなかった
美味おいしいtasty美味おいしくない美味おいしかった美味おいしくなかった
楽たのしいfun楽たのしくない楽たのしかった楽たのしくなかった

⚠️ Exception: いい (good) becomes よくない / よかった / よくなかった. A common trap!

na-Adjectives (形容動詞けいようどうし)

na-adjectives use だ instead of です in plain form:

FormPolitePlainExample (静しずか = quiet)
Affirmative静しずかです静しずかだquiet
Negative静しずかじゃないです静しずかじゃないnot quiet
Past静しずかでした静しずかだったwas quiet
Neg. past静しずかじゃなかったです静しずかじゃなかったwas not quiet

7. Nouns in Plain Form

Nouns follow the same pattern as na-adjectives:

FormPolitePlainExample (学生がくせい = student)
Affirmative学生がくせいです学生がくせいだstudent
Negative学生がくせいじゃないです学生がくせいじゃないnot a student
Past学生がくせいでした学生がくせいだったwas a student
Neg. past学生がくせいじゃなかったです学生がくせいじゃなかったwas not a student

8. Master Summary Table

All plain forms at a glance:

TypeAffirmativeNegativePastNeg. past
Ichidan食たべる食たべない食たべた食たべなかった
Godan書かく書かかない書かいた書かかなかった
するするしないしたしなかった
来くる来くる来こない来きた来こなかった
i-Adj高たかい高たかくない高たかかった高たかくなかった
na-Adj静しずかだ静しずかじゃない静しずかだった静しずかじゃなかった
Noun学生がくせいだ学生がくせいじゃない学生がくせいだった学生がくせいじゃなかった

9. When to Use Plain Form

9a. Casual conversation

With friends or younger people you do not need ~ます. Compare:

PoliteCasual
何なにを食たべますか?何なに食たべる?
映画えいがを見みました映画えいが見みた
行いきません行いかない

Sample casual dialogue:

A: 昨日きのう、何なにした? (Kinou, nani shita?) What did you do yesterday?

B: 友達ともだちと映画えいがを見みた。すごくおもしろかった! (Tomodachi to eiga o mita. Sugoku omoshirokatta!) I watched a movie with a friend. It was so fun!

9b. As a grammar building block

This is the most important use of plain form. Many patterns require plain form first:

PatternFormulaExample
~と思おもうPF + と思おもう明日あした雨あめが降ふると思おもう (I think it will rain tomorrow)
~からPF + から忙いそがしいから、行いかない (Because I’m busy, I won’t go)
~けどPF + けど食たべたけど、おいしくなかった (I ate, but it wasn’t tasty)
~ときPF + とき寝ねるとき、音楽おんがくを聴きく (When I sleep, I listen to music)

💡 We cover these patterns in later articles. For now, master making plain form first.

9c. Inside complex sentences

In long sentences, only the final clause is polite. Middle parts use plain form:

朝あさご飯はんを食たべて、新聞しんぶんを**読よんで**、会社かいしゃに行いきました。 (Asagohan o tabete, shinbun o yonde, kaisha ni ikimashita.) I ate breakfast, read the newspaper, and went to the office.

10. Common Mistakes ⚠️

❌ Wrong✅ RightWhy
食たべるない食たべないIchidan: drop る first, then add ない
買かあない買かわない~う → わない, not あない
いくない (for いい)よくないいい shifts to よ- in conjugation
来くない (read kuranai)来こない (konai)Reading changes! く→こ
静しずかない静しずかじゃないna-adj uses じゃない, not bare ない

Conclusion

Great work—you just learned the most important foundation of Japanese grammar. Key points:

  • Ichidan (ru-verbs) are easiest: drop る, add endings (ない / た / なかった).
  • Godan (u-verbs) change by final mora: negative to a-row, past follows te-form.
  • Irregular verbs are only 2: する and 来くる — memorize them!
  • i-Adjectives conjugate from い: くない / かった / くなかった. Watch いい → よ-.
  • na-Adjectives & nouns use だ / じゃない / だった / じゃなかった.
  • Plain form is for casual talk and as the base for advanced grammar.

With plain form, you are ready for richer patterns—starting with wants using たい/ほしい!

Previous: ← Self-introduction (Jikoshoukai) Next: Expressing wants: たい & ほしい →
